BBN offers N25m prize, Paediatricians award N250 to best graduating student

At a time when the winner of the ongoing Big Brother Nigeria is expecting N25m prize money, in addition to a brand new Kia Sorento SUV and recording contracts, the Paediatrics Association of Nigeria seems to have confirmed the popular impression that education in Nigeria is not accorded much honour.

The association, which sponsors the Best Student in Paediatrics award at the University of Port Harcourt, has not thought it fit to increase the prize money from an inconsequential and belittling N250, which is less than 50 cents when converted to the dollar.

Miss Joy Omubo, being the Best Graduating Student in Paediatrics for the 2014/2015 academic year, had received the prize money at the institution’s 31st convocation ceremony which held from March 17-25.

The prize was donated by the Paediatrics Association of Nigeria.

A twitter user who claimed to have graduated in the same set as Miss Omubo, Dr. Tuoyo Fregene (@ty_Fregz) had tweeted, “The best student in Paediatrics from my set back in sch was given her prize money today. Paediatric association of Nigeria gave her 250naira.”

The tweet has attracted mixed reactions from Nigerians.

Shame Of A Nation - Bisi Alimi Reacts To Kemi Olunloyo's Bail Refusal

The shame of a nation: @hnnafrica has fortunately or unfortunately become the shame of this shameless country call Nigeria. This image will forever linger in our memory and it will make Ms Olunloyo more popular than anticipated.
The plan was to crush her but it is not going to work. But to a more pressing issue. The arrest of Ms Olunloyo in a democratic, supposedly religious country for commuting absolutely no crime is nothing but a sham and a shame. A sham to the dignity of the democracy of the country call Nigeria and a shame to his people.
This is the same country that idiotic Dino is being laughed out and not locked up. I don't care what you think of Ms Olunloyo, but if you are religious and think she deserves this, then something is wrong with you. If you believe in social justice and you think she deserves, then you are a sham, if you have humanity and think it's her fault then you are nothing but a disgrace. No matter what her offences are, she doesn't deserve this uniform nor the prison.

They were also accused of impersonating a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; the Senate President, Bukola Saraki; the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi; and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.

PUNCH Metro learnt that operatives of the Inspector-General of Police, led by ACP Abba Kyari, trailed the syndicate to a hotel in Kaduna State on Tuesday, after receiving complaints from some victims.

A police source disclosed  that the suspects impersonated Moguno to collect N13m from a Ghanaian, who wanted to get an oil block in Nigeria, and posed as Lawal to swindle one Nnamdi Udo of N4m under false pretences of helping him to get a federal appointment.

“They also posed as the Chief of Staff to the President and collected N2.5m from one Mr. Bishop, who was looking for a contract, and another N700,000 from one Shehu Dan Yahaya, who was seeking a federal appointment.
“Ogogo, a native of Omoku Rivers State, impersonated prominent citizens from the South-South and South-East; Eragbe impersonated prominent persons from the North; Oshamoto posed as prominent citizens from the South-West and North-Central; while Idah supplied them SIM cards registered with the names of the top government officials.
“They were arrested in a luxury hotel in Kaduna and had confessed to impersonating several prominent citizens,” the source added.

Another senior police officer disclosed to PUNCH Metro that the suspects confessed to have realised N20m in six months from their criminal activities.

He said, “Ogogo is their leader; but they mentioned one Prince Maurice, based in the UK, as their gang leader.  Fourteen different phones, several registered SIM cards, and a diary containing phone numbers of several top government officials, were recovered from the suspects.
“Ogogo further confessed that they had made over N20m from their criminal activities within the last six months.”

Parading the suspects on Thursday in Abuja, the police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, said all the suspects confessed to the crime.

He said, “On March 23, 2017, the Intelligence Response Team arrested these notorious criminals who posed as top government functionaries.

“The four-man syndicate, led by one ‘High Chief’ Ovie Ogogo, was arrested in a hotel in Kaduna State. All the suspects confessed to the crime and admitted to have impersonated several prominent citizens and made over N20m within the last six months.”

The police said other suspects would soon be arrested, while those in custody would be arraigned in court at the conclusion of investigation.

Policemen flee as robbers kill bank customer in front of Imo Govt House

There  was pandemonium in Owerri, the Imo State capital, yesterday morning when daredevil armed robbers snatched an unspecified amount of money after shooting their victim severally in front of Imo State Government House.

According to sources, the two robbers, who were said to be in a Camry salon car, had trailed their unsuspecting victim and his wife after they withdrew money from one of the banks along the popular Cathedral Road in Owerri metropolis.

It was learnt that the two robbers, who caught up with their victim before the Okigwe roundabout, directly opposite Government House, had shot sporadically into the air to scare away people before ordering their victim to hand over the money, and when he resisted they shot him three times, snatched the money and took off through Okigwe Road.

One of the eyewitnesses said:
“I was at the newspaper stand across the road, just before the Okigwe roundabout, around 11am, when I heard a gunshot and then two young men in a Camry car blocked a man and his wife driving in another car.
“They asked the man to hand over the money. The woman ran out of the car, but the man refused to hand over the money to them. One of the robbers shot him three times and collected the money from him. I don’t know if he died.”

The source added that as soon as the robbers started shooting into the air, policemen, including personnel of the NSCDC at the roundabout opposite Government House, took to their heels.

Another witness  recounted his experience:
“I was four cars behind. When I heard gunshots, it dawned on me that those in the Camry were robbers, because the way they overtook me made me wonder where they were hurrying to. After snatching the money, they were shooting into the air, which sent people running in different directions, including the policemen at the Okigwe roundabout junction.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Imo State Police Command confirmed the incident and disclosed that the victim was confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.

Court Sentences Father To 9-Years In Jail For Raping And Impregnating His Own Child

A man, Taiwo Olubayode, has been sentenced to nine years imprisonment with hard labour and without an option of a fine by a Family Court sitting at Oke-Eda, Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The 56-year-old man was convicted for impregnating his 16-year-old daughter (name withheld) at Oke-Ijebu street, Odode- Idanre in Idanre Local Government Area of the state which is also in the Akure Magisterial District.

Olubayode, who was brought before the court by the Nigeria Security And Civil Defence Corps was charged for having incestuous behaviour with a 16-year-old girl.

The offence, according to the prosecutor, was contrary to and punishable under sections 31(1) and 31(2) of the Ondo State Child’s Right law of Nigeria Security And Civil Defence Corps 2007.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge on his first arraignment but he was later found guilty by the family court.

The NSCDC prosecuting officer Mr. Ebriku David told the court that the victim and her boss came to report her father in the NSCDC’s office in Idanre, when it was discovered that the girl was pregnant.

According to him, the case was transferred to Akure division, where the victim informed the command that her father was responsible for the pregnancy.

David also told the court that the convict had earlier confessed at the NSCDC office that he committed the offence.

In her ruling, the magistrate, Mrs O.A Edwin, said Olubayode was guilty of the offence and sentenced him to nine years imprisonment with hard labour without option of a fine.

The magistrate said it was a shame and act of high immorality for the convict to be having an incestuous affair with his own daughter.
