Ethiopia shuts internet access to stop exam malpractice

Ethiopia has shut internet access until at least June 8 to stop cheats from posting high school exam papers on social media, a government official said on Thursday.

The Grade 10 exams began yesterday and will end tomorrow.

The Grade 12 tests will begin from June 5 and end on June 8.

Last year, exam papers were widely posted online, prompting the government to reschedule the tests, which are the main public exams for 16- and 18-year-olds to secure places at university and on vocational courses.

“The shutdown is aimed at preventing a repeat of leaks that occurred last year,” Mohammed Seid, public relations director of Ethiopia’s Office for Government Communications Affairs, told Reuters.

“We are being proactive. We want our students to concentrate and be free of the psychological pressure and distractions that this brings.”

Mohammed did not give a precise date regarding when the shutdown would be lifted, but added it would last throughout the exam period.

He said only access to social media outlets was cut off and that services such as airline bookings and banking requiring internet access remained intact.

A Reuters witness confirmed that WiFi and cellular internet access has been cut off. Access at embassies and international organisations remained intact.

A woman kept her dead mother hidden in a freezer for ten years so she could continue to claim an old age pension equivalent to £1700-a-month, prosecutors revealed today.

The 90-year-old’ corpse was found after detectives started investigating the alleged social security fraudster, who is 55 and cannot be named for legal reasons.

She was living in a detached house in the picturesque village of Horsarrieu, close to Pau, in South West France, with her mother’s remains at the end of the garden.


‘They were hidden in a freezer, and there had been no report of the mother’s death,’ said a prosecuting source in nearby Mont-de-Marsan, capital of the Landes department.

‘The freezer was not connected to the electricity supply going into the house. It was just a hiding place,’ the source added.

The suspect was first interviewed by gendarmes on Tuesday, and claimed that her mother had died seven years ago.

Investigators noticed, however, that there had been no medical fees claimed by the mother since 2007, suggesting that the time of death was more likely to be a decade ago.

The Mirror reports that all the mother’s benefits arrangements, including drawing an old age pension, continued as normal throughout that time.

At the time of death, the pair were living some 200 miles away, close to Toulouse, which means that the woman would have transported the corpse in secret when they moved to Horsarrieu in July 2016.

Police have evidence that the suspect had put her own picture on her mother’s driving licence – an offence that led to a search of the property. The corpse was found wrapped in a tarpaulin, with old clothes used to hide it.

An autopsy was due to be held on Wednesday to try to establish whether the mother had died of natural causes, or whether foul play was involved.

Police Arrest Ghanaian Lady Who Contracted Someone To Murder Her Business Partner

The Ashanti Regional Police Command have arrested a 41-year-old woman after someone she allegedly contracted to murder her business partner, tipped off the police.

The suspect, Joyce Antwi, a trader and resident of Buokrom Estatae, Kumasi, was arrested by police on Saturday, May 27. According to the police, the suspect contacted the purported assassin to kill her business partner who she owed GHc 99,000.

Joyce Antwi received the said amount in October 2015 for the expansion of her business, and promised to pay back her debt by April 2017. The victim in April 27, approached the suspect and gave her a June 2017 deadline to settle the amount.

Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ken Yeboah, who paraded the suspect before newsmen, said Joyce Antwi informed the supposed assassin on the 23rd of May, to assassinate her business partner, offering an amount of GH¢5,000, of which she made an initial payment of GH¢2,500.
“Joyce Antwi then asked the complainant to execute the job in the afternoon since the victim’s husband and children will be out of the house.”

“On Friday, 26th of May, the suspect, Joyce Antwi, took the complainant to the house of the victim at Buokrom Estate to show him the house,” DCOP Ken Yeboah stated.

But the purported contract killer who meant well, alerted the police about the intentions of the suspect.
"On the 27th of May went to the victim’s residence and asked her to call the suspect to come to her residence which she obliged, and she was arrested,” DCOP Ken Yeboah added.
Joyce Antwi subsequently confessed to the crime in her caution statement during interrogation, and is in police custody, assisting with further investigations.

Federal Government To Set Up School Majorly For Married Women

The Federal Government will establish special schools for women who abandoned school to get married, Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan, has said.

“All women that married at an early age will have the opportunity to continue their education from their husband’s houses.

“The schools will be in two categories so as to avoid problems emanating from the establishment of the schools.

“The first category is for those who started their schooling but due to one reason or the other dropped out.

“The other category is for the Adult Literacy classes that will be established in all local governments to assist women to attain certain literacy level.

“In the Adult literacy schools, the women will also be empowered with skills training during their lessons.

“The women will be trained how to make soap, local soft drink, candle, pomade, cake, local hairdressing, tailoring and other small businesses.” the minister told newsmen on Thursday in Katsina.

Alhassan appealed to religious and traditional leaders to continue supporting ongoing efforts to boost the enrolment of the girl-child into schools nationwide, NAN reports.


She said that the education of female children was very important as such the leaders should encourage parents to send them to school.

Jealous Boyfriend Attacks Man With Razor For Talking To His Girlfriend

21-year-old, Ibrahim Oyebanji, who allegedly assaulted a man with a razor blade for talking with his girlfriend, was on Thursday brought before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Oyebanji, whose address was not provided, pleaded not guilty to a two-count of assault and stealing brought against him.

But the Prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko said the accused committed the offences on May 28 at 10.00.a.m. on Sari-Iganmu Road in Orile, Lagos.

‎According to him, the accused assaulted a 23-year-old, Michael Opara, by cutting him with a razor blade on his chest and caused him bodily harm.


‎The accused, he alleged, also stole‎ Opara’s N24,500 and a Nokia phone valued at N2,500, all valued at N27,000.

He told the court that the accused saw the complainant having a talk with his girlfriend and out of jealousy, he brought out the blade and cut him on the chest.

‎The offences contravened Sections 173 and 278 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

The accused, however, pleaded innocence of the offences.

‎The Chief Magistrate,Mr. A.A. Paul, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

He said the surety must be gainfully employed and should provide evidence of tax payment.

‎The court adjourned the case until June 27 for mention.
