Man convicted of vandalizing Colorado mosque kills self

A man convicted of vandalizing a Colorado mosque killed himself in a motel room Friday after he was sentenced.

Authorities found 36-year-old Joseph Giaquinto dead the next day at the Motel 6 in Fort Collins, the Coloradoan reported.

His death came after he was sentenced Thursday to three years of wellness court and work release for vandalizing the Islamic Center of Fort Collins in March.

Cops investigated the incident as a hate crime. Giaquinto said the offense didn’t stem from hate, but rather location because he lived near the mosque where he threw a Bible through the windows, according to the newspaper.

Michael Giaquinto, Giaquinto's father, told the paper his son was an Army medic for eight years and served in three different countries including Iraq.

Giaquinto also suffered from post-traumatic stress and alcohol abuse, his public defender said at his sentencing.
